MECHANICAL-PENCIL ERASER.

This invention relates to improvements in mechanical pencils, and more particularly to a mechanical pencil having an adjustable and replaceable eraser.

Many mechanical pencils now in use are not equipped with erasers, or mechanical pencils, as well as other pencils, are provided with cupped portions at the end in which the eraser is held. The exposed portion of the eraser quickly becomes worn down with the result that the pencil is discarded or theuser is subjected to the inconvenience of using the same without an erasing portion.

lit. is, therefore, the principal object of the present invention to overcome the above objections by providing a pencil in which the eraser carrying portion and eraser may be adjusted with respect to each other to expose more or less of the eraser as it becomesworn.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil of the class described in which the length of the pencil remains constant and does not vary with difierent adjustments of the eraser.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil of the class described in Which the eraser may be readily removed and replaced when desired.

A further object of the invention is to pro.- vide an adjustable eraser end for pencils adaptable to any ticularly to the so-called self feeding or mechanical pencils.

A further object of the invention is to pro- 35 vide an eraser and pencil of the class described which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved pen cil and eraser attachment and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will appear that the numeral 5 indicates a mechanical pencil of ordinary construction, the body portion of which is tubular to receive the mechanical lead feeding mechanism 6. The upper end of the body portion is open and is internally threaded to receive a plug 7 formed with an enlarged head, the plug having a longitudinally extending rectangular opening 8 through which the shank 9 of a plunger 10 slidably extends.

As shown, the head of the plug 7 rests against the end portion of the tubular body and is enclosed by a revoluble barrel or cylinder member 11 which is slightly resilient and which has a loose engagement with the headof said plug and is retained thereon by rib and groove means 12, the member 11 being free to turn on the plug head.

The major portion of the cylinder member 11 is internally threaded as at 13 to move the member 10, the head portion of which is externally threaded to engage the threads 13. A cylindrically shaped eraser member 14 seats on said member 10 so as to be moved thereby, and in proper adjustment the end portion of the eraser will project beyond the outer end portion of the member 11 to be exposed, theouter end portion of the cylinder member 11 beingtapered inwardly to bind the eraser.

In use, as the end portion of the eraser becomes worn, the cylinder member can be turned to move the plunger, member 10 upwardly therein, thereby raising the eraser to expose more of its end portion. Adjustments of this character will not vary the length of the pencil. Also when necessary the eraser member may be readily replaced and both the cylinder member and plug 7 are removable to permit access to the interipr of the pencil body.
