[Class 40 (v).] The studio or operating point B is connected to the main transmitting station S by a directed beam of ultra-short wave radiation. As shown applied to the transmission of a picture, the cylinder W is scanned by light falling on a photo-sensitive cell, and the resulting currents modulate say a 10-metre transmitter V energizing a dipole aerial D located in front of a reflector R. At the main transmitter S, the short-wave energy received at E is retransmitted on a medium wavelength. The picture signals may be used to interrupt the short-wave radiation from the transmitter V, or they may be modulated on the short-wave carrier, either directly or through an intermediate frequency.
