Nov. 29, 1932, No. 33803. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1931. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] A method of transmitting intelligence comprises producing a radio-frequency current, modulated in accordance with the intelligence to be transmitted, which varies a light beam, Photo-electric cells 17, 18 receive light from an object 16 being scanned, the picture currents modulating a radio-frequency oscillation at 20. A transformer 5 varies the light from the arc 1, a shield 9 preventing light from the glowing electrodes from being transmitted. At the receiver, a photo-electric cell 28 receives the light, the currents produced being amplified at 29 and fed to a television receiver 31. Similarly a microphone 22 may modulate light from another arc, the received signals being similarly fed to an amplifier 33 and loud-speaker 34. The amplifier 33 may be alternatively connected to an aerial 36 by switch 32. The receiving cells 28 are preferably housed in a rotatable casing so as to be directed towards a desired transmitter.
