Abstract

693,263. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 3, 1952 [June 5, 1951], No. 13364/51. Class 40 (vii). An aerial system for producing a scanning beam of radio energy comprises a fixed source of radio energy, a radio mirror towards which the source is directed and a lens through which passes at least the energy reflected by the mirror, the mirror and the lens being connected mechanically to form a single unit which is oscillated about an axis meeting the lens axis at or behind the mirror. In the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1, the plane mirror M and lens L are oscillated about an axis X behind the mirror M, the energy source being positioned between the mirror and the lens at F. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the source F is offset from the axis of the system and the mirror M is inclined so that it is no longer parallel to the axis X. Fig. 3 illustrates a system employing a combined mirror and lens ML comprising a honey-comb structure of tubular elements open at the front surface ML2 but closed at the rear surface ML1 to provide the mirror surface. The mirror surface may be stepped, as shown, and as shown the axis X coincides with the mirror surface. In alternative arrangements, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), a concave mirror is employed having a stepped dielectric lens shaped to conform closely to the mirror surface attached thereto.
