Abstract

1,178,782. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 3524/68. Heading H4A. In an aerial system a plane polarized horn 1, Fig. 1, is directed towards a reflector 2, an orthogonally polarized grating 3 being interposed. The axes of the reflector and of the grating are at an angle, and a cluster of horns 4, which are positioned outside the beam between the horn and the reflector, can illuminate the said reflector via reflection at the said grating. The grating may be planar or hyperboloidal, and it functions similarly to a subreflector in a Cassegrain type aerial comprising also the cluster of horns and the reflector. The main horn may be offset from the reflector to avoid aperture blocking (Fig. 2, not shown). The number of horns in the cluster may be four or five, arranged as a row of three with one or two laterally displaced from the centre thereof (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The system may be used in a tropospheric scatter link with the horns of the cluster arranged for angle diversity reception, and frequency diversity may also be provided.
