Abstract

815,178. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 15, 1957 [Feb. 16, 1956], No. 5212/57. Class 40 (7). An aerial system capable of transmitting or receiving two distinct radio waves having mutually perpendicular linear polarizations consists of a waveguide horn having a grille of parallel conductive members across its mouth and a primary element in front of the grille and orientated so as to co-operate with radio energy reflected by the grille. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment in which a waveguide 1 is fed by a probe 3 from a coaxial line 5. The waveguide is coupled to a radiating horn 2 across the mouth of which extends a grille 8 of parallel conductive rods. These rods do not affect the radiation from the horn but reflect energy of orthogonal polarization radiated by dipole 7 mounted in front of the horn and fed by coaxial line 7. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, both not shown) the dipole is replaced by a unipole fed by a coaxial line extending to it in a direction parallel to and outside the bars of the grille. The outer conductor of the coaxial line is provided with a quarter wavelength skirt.
