Abstract
647,417. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 6, 1948, No. 3543. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1946. [Class 40 (vii)] A directive antenna system comprises a plurality of radiating elements such as the horizontal dipoles 2 and, for the purpose of adjusting the directive pattern, shielding means substantially a half-wavelength long in the direction of polarization are adjustably disposed adjacent certain of the radiating elements. The array may be located in front of a reflector 4 and it is stated that the normal procedure for adjusting the pattern is to insert a metal shield 5 between a certain radiator and the reflector to test the effect of eliminating the radiation from that dipole. If the pattern is improved the array is dismantled and the dipole adjusted to receive less energy. According to the present invention a cover 6 of resin-impregnated canvas is provided for the array and its wave-guide feed and a strap 7 of conductive material half a wavelength long in the direction of polarization of the radiation is slid up and down the cover, as shown, to locate the undesired dipoles. The strap which may be aluminium foil may then be taped over and covered with varnish so that it becomes a permanent part of the system. Several straps may be used if required.
