Abstract

814,355. Aerials. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Sept. 26, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956]. No. 30219/57. Class 40 (7). An aerial system for horizontally polarized energy designed to have a radiation polar diagram which, in the vertical plane, approximates to a cosecant squared curve, consists of a parabolic reflector 5 fed by a plurality of radio horns 1 to 4, means being provided in the mouths of the horns to narrow their individual polar diagrams to give the required resultant radiation pattern. As shown, the horns are placed closely adjacent to each other in the focal plane of the reflector; all being directed to illuminate the same zone. They are fed to illuminate the reflector in phase. If, as is known, the horns are used without modification to feed the reflector, the width of their primary patterns is such that their individual secondary patterns are too sharp and do not overlap adequately, thus giving marked low intensity regions in the resulting composite pattern. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, each horn has a metallic rod conductor 7 placed centrally across its mouth parallel to the electric vector and is provided with a dielectric member shaped as a segment of a cylinder with its flat face in, and covering, the horn mouth. These elements narrow the primary patterns of the horns and the individual secondary patterns are correspondingly broadened to give a smoother composite cosecsquared pattern.
