Abstract

660,788. Directive-radio systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1948 [Jan. 16, 1947], No. 1368/48. Class 40 (vii). A continuously rotating directive aerial system comprising a primary aerial element 1 and a radiator 2, comprising either a horn as illustrated or a paraboloidal reflector, is surrounded by a lens structure 3 comprising a plurality of radiallypositioned conducting plates forming wave-guide elements modifying the phase velocity of the radiation passing through them, the elements 1, 2 being continuously rotated by a motor 4. The plates are so shaped that a spherical wavefront diverging from 1 would produce an equiphase surface over the outer surface of the lens 3. To produce a narrow beam the phase must be equalized over the target plane to the outer lens surface touching the surface along the axis of the radiation. This is achieved by inserting metallic plates into the horn 2 so as to advance the phase of the waves which diverge from the horizontal axis of the system 1, 2 with respect to those radiated along this axis. The lens thus functions to sharpen the rotating beam in the vertical plane while the horn 2 provides a narrow beam in the horizontal plane. If it is desired to tilt the radiated beam in elevation the outer surface of the lens 3 may be suitably conically shaped. Specification 650,767 is referred to.
