Abstract
1434986 Aerials; radio-navigation INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 12 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 33321/73 Headings H4A and H4D An aerial system comprises a parallel-plate waveguide which has a circular sector aperture, and which is excited by an array of radiating elements disposed along a straight line parallel to said plates. As described, with reference to Fig. 3, plates 2 and 5 are semicircular in shape (n.b., plate 5, being under plate 2, is not seen in the figure), and the array 1 is disposed along the diametrical edge of the waveguide. The elements of the array are independently excitable, and are fed via commutating means to provide a Doppler type beacon. The aperture of the waveguide may be provided with flared extensions 2<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4(b), upon which a radome may be mounted if required. In another embodiment, flared extensions 2<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 4(c), are provided to produce a down-turned sectoral horn which acts as an offset feed for a reflector 6. Said reflector is substantially semicircular (convex outwards) in azimuthal planes and is concave outwards (parabolic, for example) in radial vertical planes. The radiating elements may be monopoles or slots (Figs. 4(d), (4(e), 4(f), not shown). The spacing between the plates 2, 5 may be less than #/2 with vertically polarized radiation, and be between #/2 and #. with horizontally polarized radiation, where # is the wavelength at the operating frequency. In another embodiment, the radiating elements are fed from a distribution network 12, Fig. 5, through respective variable phase shifters, by means of which the radiated beam may be steered.
