Abstract

675,245. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 8, 1950, No. 14323/50. Class 40 (vii). In a directional aerial system comprising a paraboloidal reflector 1 fed at the focus by a waveguide horn 2, mismatch due to energy reflected back to the horn is minimized by displacing a circular apex portion 4, 5 of the reflector along the axis of the system to a position 6, 7 so that the energy reflected back to the form from the displaced apex portion substantially cancels that reflected back from the other portions of the reflector over a relatively wide frequency band. The Specification shows that optimum cancellation is effected when b=#f#/3 and d=(n+1/12)# where b is the radius of the displaced portion, d is the displacement, f is the focal length of the paraloloid, A is the operating wavelength and n is an integer. In order to avoid distortion of the main radiation pattern, d should be as small as possible, i.e. n=o. As shown, the apex portion is displaced towards the focus but the displacement may be in the reverse direction. The displacement may be effected by mounting on the apex a circular plate of thickness d formed to the same curvature as the apex or by spacing a similarly shaped thin plate by brackets, or adjustable supports. Specification 581,457 is referred to.
