June 20, 1932, No. 4944/34. Divided on and addition to 407,690, under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 21, 1932. [Class 120 (ii).] In an apparatus for spinning yarns from bast fibres as described in the parent Specification each of the two slip draft devices consists of a pair of positively driven rollers, e.g. 19, 19<a> and 20, 20<a>, Fig. 1. Alternatively one pair of rollers is driven positively and the other pair frictionally, while in further modifications one device consists of a stationary rod or of a group of rods arranged to provide a tortuous path for the sliver. The rollers 19, 20 are deeply fluted throughout their length while the rollers 19<a>, 20<a> are deeply fluted only at their ends the rollers 19, 20 being positively driven and serving to drive the rollers 19<a>, 20<a>. The latter are carried by a pivoted bracket 21, the roller 19<a> being mounted in a slot 22. In a modification, a number of rods 25, Fig. 5, arranged so that the sliver is forced to follow a tortuous path, are substituted for the upper pair of rollers 19, 19<a>. As shown three rods are fixed in the frame while two other rods joined by a bridge 26 are removably accommodated in slots 27 in a plate 28. When dealing with long uniform fibres a single rod is found to provide sufficient drag. In a further modification, plain rollers 34, 34a, Fig. 7, are substituted for the upper rollers 19, 19<a> the roller 34 being positively driven and the roller 34<a>, which is supported by a bracket 35, being frictionally driven therefrom. Alternative forms of slip draft devices which may be used comprise two positively driven rollers with plain or scratched surfaces, a group of three rollers of which one rests on or is pressed against the other two, and a narrow channel or slotted bar through which the sliver is dragged.
