406,010. Control of D.C. motors. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. July 15, 1932, No. 20137. Convention date, July 20, 1931. [Class 38 (iii).] In electric locomotives in which unidirectional current is supplied to the driving motor by a metal-vapour rectifier, at least one anode or set of anodes of the rectifier is employed only during starting and one other anode or set is brought into use only after the initial starting and employed during normal running, the anodes or sets being correspondingly dimensioned and only a fraction of the full working voltage being supplied to the starting anode. Current is supplied to the motor 5 from a transformer 3 through rectifier anodes 8, 9. During starting, the potentials of grids 7, 7<a> respectively associated with the anodes 8, 9 are controlled as by switches 14, 19 to allow the arc to pass to the anodes 9 and to stop the arc to the anodes 8. When a predetermined speed is attained, the arc to the anodes 8 is started and that to the anodes 9 suppressed. The anodes 8 may be connected to the full-voltage terminals of the transformer 3 and the phase of the voltages on the grids 7 controlled to increase gradually the effective potential, or the anodes 8 may be supplied with potentials increasing from or through the potential of the lowvoltage tappings 11, for example, as shown by tappings 12 and switches 15. The passage of current to the anodes may be controlled by external switches alternatively or additionally to the grid control. Two or three sets of starting anodes connected to two or three transformer tappings may be used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement in which the rectifier has only one anode or set of anodes and in which the potential on the anode is progressively increased by voltage distributors and transformer tappings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
