[Classes 35 and 38 (ii).] Multiple anode mercury - vapour valves 2, used, for example for converting D.C. to A.C. and in replacing commutators in electric motors by cyclic control of grid potentials, have the grids connected through the controlling commutator 3 to a source of alternating voltage 4 of many times the frequency of ignition, and of an amplitude exceeding that of a negative bias applied to the grids for example by the battery 5. A voltage of the frequency of that feeding a motor may also be superposed upon the high frequency voltage.
