Abstract

568,556. Valve generating circuits. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 21, 1943, No. 17375. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] The invention relates to frequency dividing circuits comprising a multi-vibrator to which the frequency to be divided is fed through a buffer stage. The cathodes of the multivibrator pair are connected together and grounded through a resistance, while the anode of one valve is connected through a resistance to a direct-current ,source and through a coupling condenser to the grid of the other valve. The buffer stage whose output is fed to the control grid of one of the multi-vibrator valves has its cathode positively biassed relatively to ground, while its control grid is connected both to the anode of one of the multivibrator valves and to means for impressing on it a voltage which increases with time relatively to ground. In this way only the first valve of the multi-vibrator is conductive during the charging period while the gain in the buffer stage, and thus the amplitude of the negative pulses fed to the conductive valve in the multi-vibrator, increases rapidly at the point at which the valves in the multi-vibrator change over in conductivity. In this way, division of frequency in a ratio much greater than 10 to 1 is achieved with reliable operation. The Figure shows a multi-vibrator 1, 2 with the common cathode resistance 9 from which the output is derived, while the ratio of division is determined by the negative bias applied from the potentiometer 12 to the grid of the valve 2 and the time constant of the condenser 31 charged over resistance 29 and discharged by valve 2. The input is applied to terminals 27 of the buffer stage 16, from the output of which negative pulses are fed over a condenser 22 to the multi-vibrator valve 1. The point at which the gain of the buffer stage 16 increases is determined by the bias applied to the cathode from potentiometer 28.
