Abstract

631,678. Pulse generating circuits. SCOLES, G. J., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4854. [Class 40 (vi)] In a flip-flop circuit in which the duration of the unstable state is terminated by a retriggering signal applied to the cathode of the valve which is then non-conducting, the amplitude of signal required to perform this action is reduced by means of a feed-back circuit between the anode and control grid of the cut-off valve which applies a signal to the grid of the valve to oppose the negative potential which causes the valve to be non-conducting. The Figure shows valves V1, V2 arranged in a cathode-coupled flip-flop circuit, the time constant of the network R2, C1, being very long and the unstable state when V2 is non-conducting being terminated by a signal applied across resistor R3. The anode of valve V2 is connected to its control grid via resistor R5 and capacitor C1 so that during the unstable state when valve V2 is cut-off by a negative voltage at its control grid the positive rise of voltage at its anode is fed back to the grid to reduce the negative potential there and thus to enable the flip-flop to be retriggered back to its initial stable state by a signal of relatively small amplitude. The feed-back is controlled by a capacitor C2 connected between the anode of V2 and a point of fixed potential. Initially, due to the presence of C2 the anode potential of V2 does not vary but subsequently when V2 is cut-off capacitor C2 will charge through resistor R4. The pulse appearing at the anode of valve V may be used to trigger a discharging valve V3 connected across a capacitor C4 in a sawtooth generating circuit. Specification 612,244 is referred to.
