Abstract

Natural silk or fibres of artificial silk consisting of or containing regenerated cellulose or cellulose esters or ethers are weighted by treatment with colloidal solutions of mixed basic chlorides of weighting metals which are prepared by adding to aqueous solutions of the chlorides of weighting metals, one or more carbonates or hydroxides of weighting metals whose chlorides are soluble and phosphates are insoluble followed by the usual treatment with phosphate or other solutions to precipitate the weighting metals. In a modification, instead of using carbonates or hydroxides of weighting metals, solutions of compounds in which the weighting metal is present in the acid radicle, e.g. sodiumzincate, aluminate, plumbate or stannate may be employed. In an example, zinc carbonate is added to a solution of tin chloride, degummed silk or viscose is treated with the resulting colloidal solution of basic zinc-tin chloride, and the weighting finally effected by treatment with an alkali metal phosphate e.g., disodium phosphate. The use of hydroxides or carbonates of magnesium, aluminium, tin, lithium, barium, calcium, strontium, cadmium, copper, iron, chromium, uranium lead, bismuth, zirconium, titanium and the rare earth metals is referred to. The rare earth metals cerium, lanthanum, didymium, thorium, scandium, yttrium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, terbium, europium, gadolinium ore ytterbium are mentioned. For the final weighting step, in place of alkali phosphate, sodium silicate, tungstate and molybdate may be used, and in place of tin chloride, the chlorides of iron, chromium, manganese zirconium and titanium are suitable.
