Abstract

500,404. Luminescent materials. HIRSCHEL, W. N. March 10, 1938, No. 7512. [Class 39 (i)] Phosphoresecnt lithopone for luminous and covering paints is made by introducing into a purified zinc sulphate solution a small amount of a copper, manganese, cadmium, bismuth, silver or other salt or a mixture thereof suitable for the activation of zinc sulphide luminophores, or purifying a zinc sulphate solution only so far that a sufficient quantity of said salts remains therein, precipitating the zinc with barium sulphide or a mixture of barium sulphide and sodium sulphide, and calcining the raw lithopone so obtained. A chloride or fluoride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or of zinc or magnesium to act as a flux may be added to the zinc sulphate solution or may be incorporated into the lithopone at a stage in the manufacture thereof, for example by washing the latter in the filter press with a solution of the salts.
