Abstract

574,321. Luminescent materials. WELLS, A. F. Aug. 15, 1941, No. 10425. [Class 39 (i)] Luminescent materials containing alkaline earth metal sulphides in association with zinc or cadmium compounds are made by heating together at a temperature in the neighbourhood of 900-950‹ C. the constituent materials to form the sulphides in the presence of a salt or compound of either or both zinc or cadmium. The zinc or cadmium salts are preferably sulphates, but other salts such as tungstates, phosphates or sulphides are suitable ; in addition salts of the alkali or alkaline earth metals may be used. The activators may be bismuth or lead. The material may be made from the following constituents : 2 parts by weight of pure lime, 1.4 of pure sulphur, to which are added 10 per cent each of potassium chloride, cadmium sulphate and zinc sulphate, with lead in the proportion of .0008 gramme per gramme of calcium oxide. This gives a pale cream fluorescence. A similar preparation with 5 per cent potassium sulphide, 1 per cent of cadmium sulphate and 1 per cent of zinc sulphate gives a phosphor with bright white fluorescence.
