Abstract
1522368 Mixed sulphide phosphors DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Oct 1976 [12 Aug 1975] 33628/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C4] A phosphor has the general formula M(Ln 1-x R x ) S 2 where M is Li, Na, K, Rb and/or Cs, Ln is Y, Sc or a lanthanide (At No 57 to 71), R is Y, Sc or a lanthanide but not the same as Ln, and x is 0À05 to less than 1. A phosphor of formula NaY 0À9 Tb 0À1 S 2 is disclosed which is excited by electrons, α-rays, X- rays, UV radiation and electric fields in electroluminescent cells and may be also used in fluorescent and cathodoluminescent devices. Neodymium may be used to replace terbium. The phosphor may be made by firing a mixture of a sulphide, carbonate or bicarbonate of a Group IA metal (M) with a sulphide or oxide of Y, Sc or a lanthanide and a sulphide or oxide of R, in H 2 S with or without N 2 at 800-1000‹C and washing the product with water to remove sulphides or polysulphides of M.
