Abstract

1344451 Sulphides and oxysulphides of rare earth elements COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 26 May 1971 [27 May 1970] 17302/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C4] Sulphides, oxysulphides containing one or more of the lanthanides and yttrium and solid solutions thereof are prepared by heating an amorphous oxycarbonate with dry gaseous H 2 S (to yield the sulphide) or with wet gaseous H 2 S (to yield the oxy sulphide) or to a temperature not exceeding 1000‹ C. The dry gaseous H 2 S may be mixed with H 2 . The sulphides and oxysulphides may contain only one or more of lanthanides and yttrium or may contain additionally other metals such as Al, Ga, Mn and V. Compounds of formula MLn 2 S 4 where M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Cd, Mn or Zn are prepared by heating oxycarbonates having a ratio Ln : M = 2 to less than 800‹ C. with pure dry H 2 S. Compounds of formula M x Eu 1-x S where M is Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Cd or Mn and 0 < x < 1 are prepared by heating an oxycarbonate wherein the ratio Eu : M is (1-x)/x with pure dry H 2 S at 600-700‹ C. Oxysulphides containing at least one of lanthanides and yttrium and optionally at least one other trivalent metal may be prepared by heating sulphides prepared according to the process of the invention with a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and water or, for elements from La-Sm, argon and water the following compounds and solid solutions are claimed per se: La 2 S 3 in the a form; Ln 6 M 3À33 S 14 wherein Lu = La, Pr or Nd and M = Mn, Ln = Dy and M = Ga or Ln = La and M = V; where 0 < x < 2, Ln<SP>1</SP> and Ln<SP>11</SP> = La, Pr or Nd; Ln<SP>1</SP> 2-x Ln<SP>11</SP> x S 3 in the α and γ forms where 0 < x < 2, Ln<SP>1</SP> and Ln<SP>11</SP> = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd or Dy; Ln 2-x Ln x O 2 S where 0À2 < x < 2 or 0 < x < 0À0002, Ln<SP>1</SP> and Ln<SP>11</SP> = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, or Lu; where 0 < x < 1 and 0 < x<SP>1</SP> < 1, Ln<SP>1</SP> and Ln<SP>11</SP> = La, Pr, Nd, or Sm and M<SP>1</SP> and M<SP>11</SP> = Al, Ga, Mn or V; SrDy 2 S 4 ; BaSm 2 S 4 ; PbNd 2 S 4 ; PbGd 2 S 4 ; PhSm 2 S 4 ; Pb x Eu 1-x S and Cd x Eu 1-x S where 0 < x < 1; and (Ln x Bi 1-x ) 2 O 2 S where 0À9 < x < 1. The oxycarbonates used may be prepared by pyrolysing in air or CO 2 a citrate complex of the metals desired in the final product.
