Abstract
1,264,422. Luminescent materials. G. T. E. SYLVANIA Inc. 13 Feb., 1969 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 7958/69. Heading C4S. A phosphor comprises a divalent Eu activated Sr, Ba and/or Ca halophosphate. The phosphor has an apatite structure and is represented by M# 10-x Eu<SP>2+</SP> x .X 2 (PO 4 ) 6 , where Me is Sr, Ba and/or Ca; X is Cl or Br and 1À5 # x # 0À0005. The phosphor is prepared from Me di-orthophosphate and Me carbonate, NH 4 or MeX 2 and EU 2 O 3 , or from NH 4 phosphate, chloride and/or bromide, Me compounds and compounds of Eu which decompose on heating into the oxide, alternatively Eu phosphate may be coprecipitated with Me phosphate. The materials are mixed and fired first in covered crucibles in air or N 2 then in H 2 and N 2 to ensure that the Eu is divalent.
