Abstract

245,612. Mines, H. M. May 18, 1925. Luminous compositions comprise a base consisting of the carbonates of strontium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, lithium and rubidium together with carbonaceous matter such as starch, sulphur, and small amounts of one or more compounds of thallium, thorium, uranium. bismuth, silver or nickel (termed phosphorogens), together with one or more compounds of sodium, potassium, manganese, barium or calcium (termed luminophores). The phosphorogens in combination with the luminophores, are said to be responsible for the colour of the light emitted by the compositions. In a preferred method of manufacture, the strontium and calcium carbonates are dissolved in nitric, hydrochoric or other acid, impurities are removed, and the phosphorogens are added preferably in aqueous or slightly acid alcoholic solution. The mixed solution is precipated as carbonates, and the precipate dried and mixed with the remaining ingredients. The composition is then ground and furnaced. It necessary further luminophores may be added and the product reheated. Several examples of compositions emitting variously coloured lights are described.
