Abstract
403,086. Cardboard boxes. FILMER, R. H., 9, Allen Street, Clerkenwell, London. June 13, 1932, Nos. 16648 and 31754. [Class 18.] Improved means for carrying and closing cardboard boxes comprise a lid formed of two layers d hinged at d <1> to the tops of two opposite sides a of the box, each layer d having approximately the same area as the top of the box, and one layer being adapted to fold down on to the other which rests on supporting means such as flaps c, and a handle portion h formed by slitting each layer between a crease e and the free edge d<2> of the layer, the creases acting as hinges for the handle portions and one handle portion being adapted to pass through the gap from which the other handle portion was cut, while a clip holds the two layers of the lid together. This clip may comprise a portion d<3>, formed when cutting one handle portion, and a slit m for it to engage in. The hand holes g in the handle portions are formed by slits g<1> and a portion j may be left hinged to the crease e in one layer to close any gap which might appear between the handle portions. The crease e may only extend the length of the handle portion, and one handle portion may be wider than the other, the narrower one being extended by slots l. This ensures the two handle portion being in contact. The sides a of the box may be inclined and formed with ventilation holes k. The handles may be bent down either both to one side or one to each side of the creases e when the boxes are to be stacked. The hand holes g may be cut so that portions are left between them and the creases e, or the nut g<1> may extend along the creases e and around the ends of the gap g thus forming a flap which may be turned against the face of the handle hand sewn thereto. In another form, the gap g is formed by cutting two hinged flaps, one of which may be sewn against the handle portion h while the other which is hinged to the crease e sewn to close any space at the centre of the box when the lid is closed. In place of the supporting flaps c external pockets may be formed at the ends of the box by flaps hinged to the two long sides thereof and extension flaps on the under layer of the lid are formed to fit into said pockets. A modified form of box suitable for carrying a single bottle has the crease e in the under layer of the lid coincident with the hinge connecting the layer to the side of the box while the crease in the upper layer is positioned to coincide with the top of this side of the box. The extension of the upper layer beyond the crease e folds down against the long side of the box, the projection d<3> engaging a slot therein, and the handle portions then project from one edge of the box. This box has double ends, each outer face being formed by two flaps hinged to the sides of the box, and each inner face by a flap hinged to the bottom of the box. These last mentioned fiaps support the under layer of the lid.
