(Cl. 229-51) This invention relates to a handled carton, such as of corrugated breboard generally employed for packing and carrying canned beer, or as a packaged container for other products.

It is the purpose of the invention to provide a convenient carrying handle formed integral with and as a part of -the ireboard blank in a manner to have a number of desirable advantages. Thus, the handle portion comprises merely an extension of the container securing aps which may be bent outwardly at right angles thereto and having a pair of iinger holes. This arrangement permits of a maximum amount of load (carrying capacity) as compared with other known handle structures.

It permits the use of the regular slotted carton type of container which is of minimum production cost since the slotting and scoring may all be done on rotary equipment, and the small amount of die cutting required can be done with simple attachments on the regular printer slotter. Being of one piece integral form, no extra parts are required and no separate operation by either the manufacturer or user is necessary for handle attachment.

It may further be observed that this handled carton 1s of ample carrying strength without requiring the use of multiple thickness board or board heavier than that of the carton, nor increasing the weight of board of the entire carton above normal requirements. Since the handle normally lies at as an extension of one of the aps, until bent outwardly, in use, it oiers no interference to the conventional box sealing equipment and packing of the cartons in shipment and storage. Asth'e handle is exposed no instructions are necessary and 1t 1s always ready for use without requiring bending of several aps together or lifting the handle from within the carton.

Another feature of the invention resides in the arrangement for opening the carton through the medium of the handle. By scoring o1' perforating the side panel of which the handle is an extension through a sudden jerk and pull on the handle a side portion of the carton may be opened along the perforations to expose the contents for removal.

Other features and advantages of the invention will be made obvious from the following description and accompanying drawings.

The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the carton set up ready for packing.

Fig. 2 is a layout of the blank forming the carton of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 1, showing the carton packed and sealed with the handle turned up for use.

Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the carton with a portion torn away by the handle to expose the contents.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form of handled carton.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another modied form of carton.

In the drawings there is shown (Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4) a handled carlton of corrugated breboard having end walls 10 and 11, and side walls 12 and 13. Hinged to said walls, as by scoring, there are top sealing ilaps 14, 15, 16 and 17, respectively. Also, hinged to said walls at their opposite side are bottom sealing flaps 18, 19, 20 and 21, respectively. Hinged to the free end of the side Wall 12 there is provided the usual securing ilap 22 by means of which the carton is set up upon said securing ap being stapled as at 23 to the adjacent end wall 10, or otherwise secured as by gluing or the like.

The above provides the standard slotted type of carton wherein the slotting and scoring is all done on rotary equipment. To provide the handled carton of this invention, the side wall 12 provided with the securing ap 22 has an integral handle extension 24 which may be hinged thereto along the hinge line indicated at 25 to normally lie at against the adjacent end wall 10 for convenience in packing, stacking and shipping. Said handle extension has provided therein one or more nger or hand holes 26 (Fig. 3) normally closed by the ears 27 hinged as by scoring at 28.

Extending inwardly of the side wall 12 there is a pair of parallel spaced perforations or scored tear lines 29 in alignment with or extending from opposite ends of the securing flap 22. By jerking the handle away from the end 16, tearing loose the securing means or staples 23, that portion 12a of the side wall 12 may be ripped open along the tear lines to expose the contents of the carton for convenient removal, as shown in Fig. 4.

As shown in the modified form of Fig. 5, the handle 24 may be hinged to an extension 122 of the wall 112, which extension is secured at 23 midway or center of the adjacent wall 110. Thus, the handle is centered with respect to one of the walls rather than adjacent the corner as in Fig. 1.

In the modiiication of Fig. 6, one wall, for example an end wall, may comprise the extension 222 hinged from the wall 212 and an extension 210 hinged from the opposite wall 213. Said extensions meet and overlap centrally of the intermediate or end wall to be stapled or otherwise secured at 23.

The invention claimed is:

1. A handled carton of libreboard having side and end walls with hinged bottom and top closure aps, a securing flap hinged to one of said walls as an extension thereof to overlap and lie flat against a portion of an adjacent wall, a carton carrying handle portion formed integral with and extending from said extension to initially lie at against said adjacent wall adapted to be bent outwardly therefrom when put to use as a carrying handle, means for securing said extension to said adjacent wall for defining and securing said handle portion, and a pair of spaced parallel tear lines extending inwardly of said one of said walls from opposite ends of said securing ap to permit a portion of said wall to be ripped open upon jerking said handle portion and ap free of said securing means.

A blank of breboard for forming a handled carton having side and end wall portions, said blank having an end ap hinged to one of said wall portions as an extension thereof adapted to overlap and lie at against an adjacent wall portion to be secured thereto, a carton carrying handle portion formed integrally with and extending from said end llap and separated therefrom by a hinge line, said handle portion having a linger hole therein, and a pair of spaced parallel tear lines extending inwardly of said one of said walls from opposite ends of said end ap to permit a portion of said wall to be ripped away by said handle portion.
