Claims.
My invention relates to cartons, and more particularly to a carton that is formed from a single blank of material suitably-scored or creased, and cut to provide the carton when it is folded. Cartons of this character are generally made of fibreboard or any other suitable paperlike or fibrous material which may be readily scored or creased, cut and perforated. v
My invention has as its objects, among others, the provision in a carton of the character described of an improved arrangement of walls and portions disengageable therefrom for enabling the carton to be readily and easily opened out to render access to the contents therein, in which the walls may be readily set up to form the carton, and which is of simple and economical construction. Other objects ofmy invention will become .apparent from a perusal of the following description thereof.

Hingedly connected to cover 3 adiacent the free edge thereof, by means of score or crease line 8, is a sealing flap 9 which'ls adapted to be secured to top wall 9 of the carton; the wall 9 being adjacent such edge in the folded position 1 of the carton illustrated in Fig. 2. For'securing Cartons of the character to which my invention relates are particularly adapted for the package ing of substances, such as ice cream, butter and' i cheese; and for these substances which are generally packed in the form of bricks, it is desirable that the carton may be readily opened from about the enclosed brick, so that the brick may be easily cut, or transferred to a dish or the like. In the following description of the carton, the specific names applied to the walls are merely for purpose of'explanatiom. as it is tube understood,"for example, that any wall may be the bottom wall of the carton, although for clarity, only one wall is designated as the bottom wall herein. Such bottom wall 2 is formed integrally with a cover wall 9 which actually forms a side wall when the carton is positioned for opening thereof, as is illustrated in Fig. 2; another side wall 4; and a top wall 9. These walls are all sealing flap 9, a suitable adhesive, such as glue, indicated by the stippling II, is applied thereto. thus enabling it to be secured to the upper side of the edge portion of top wall 6 adjacent the sealing flap. 7
When the carton is set up, its ends :are closed by end closure flaps hingedly connected to the previously mentioned walls by means of transversely extending crease orsoore lines l2; the individual flaps being separated from each other in a conventional manner by means of longitudinally extending cut-s l3 which continue from the crease lines 1; Such flaps include rectangularly shaped flaps l4 integral with the top wall 6 and the bot tom wall 2, and locking flaps I6 integral with the cover 3 and side wall 4. Each of the looking flaps I6 is formed with a locking tongue I! and a partial cut l8 adjacent such tongue, to permit the flaps It at the same end of the carton. to be interlocked, as is depicted in Fig. 2, with the rectangularly shaped flaps ll overlapping inside the interlocked flaps. at such end; but anyv other con. ventional locking means can be employed.
It is the general practice to-ship the carton flat,
i. In filling the carton with'a substance such as ice cream, the carton is set up with the end flaps at their side closed; and after filling of the carton with the desired product, the flaps at the opposite end are then closed.
To enable the carton to be opened quickly, I provide 'a special arrangement of suitable lines of weakness, or tear lines in the carton blank,
which'may be formed by perforating the blank sheet; so that portions of thecarton may be readily disengaged. Such lines of weakness in-' clude parallel tear lines 2| in sealing flap 9,
Top wall '8 is formed with parallel transversely extending tear lines 21, end portions of which coincide with tear lines 2| in sealing flap 9 when the sealing flap is secured to top wall 6; a 1ongitudinally extending out 28 being formed in top 8 between tear lines 21, to enable part 29 in the top and which is secured to sealing flap 9, when the carton is closed, to be readily removed with tear strip 22 when it is disengaged, as is shown in Fig. 2. The other disengageable part 3| in top 8 is integral with a disengageable part 32 in wall 4 formed by tear 1ines'33 in wall 4, which lead from tear lines 21 and extend obliquely to corners 34 adjacent the edge of bottom 2 opposite the edge of which comers 26 are located.
By virtue of the described arrangement. it can be seen from Figs. 2 and 3 that the carton can be readily opened by pulling on tab 23, to disengage tear strip 22 and portion 26' in cover 3. This leaves an opening 36 in top 6 rendering ready accessto part 3| in the top, which under pulling thereof will enable ready disengagement of the portion including part 3| and part 32.

ing to the four comers of bottom 2, the brick in the carton will be substantially completely exposed when the carton is opened. In this connection. it will be noted that the end portions of the carton will be secured only at such corners, as can be observed from Fig. 3. Consequently, they can be readily removed, either by a slight upward pull, or by bending them out of the way.
If desired, in order to facilitate handling 01 part 3| when it is desired to disengage it, the cut 28 between tear lines 21 may be formed to provide a tab 38, as shown in Fig. 4. This tab can be readily grasped after tear strip 22 is disengaged, since tearing of the strip 22 tends to lift the tab 38, thus minimizing the possibility of the hand contacting the contents in the carton. Also a spot of adhesive may be placed on the tab 38, or the portion of flap 9 adapted to overli the tab, so that as the tearstrip 22 pulls away from the tab 38, the tab will be lifted by virtue of the adhesive connection.
Iclaim:
1. A carton comprising a plurality of hingedly connected walls, all but one of such walls being provided with tear lines enabling portions of the carton to be disengagedand th tear lines in the walls connected to said one wall leading from a position between the ends of such walls obliquely to all the corners of said one wall to .allow opposite end portions of the carton to be disengaged and leave said one wall intact and flat.
2. A carton comprising a plurality of hingedly connected walls; all but one of such walls being provided with tear lines enabling portions of the carton to be disengaged, the tear lines in the walls connected to said one wall leading obliquely to all the corners of said one wall whereby when such portions are disengaged end portions of the carton may be disengaged, and one of the walls which is provided with tear lines being hingedly connected to a sealing flap having tear lines leading from the tear lines in such wall to. provide a tear strip.
3. A carton comprising a plurality of hingedly connected walls, all but one of such walls being provided with tear lines enabling portions of the carton to be disengaged, the tear lines in the walls connected to said one wall leading obliquely to all the corners 01. said one wall whereby when such portions are disengaged, end portions of the carton may be disengaged. one of the walls which is provided with tear lines being hingedly connected to a sealing flap having tear lines leading from the tear lines in such wall to provide a tear strip, and an extension on the tear strip providing a tab to be grasped.
' 4. A carton provided with hingedly connected walls including a bottom wall and a cover hingedly connected to the bottom wall, a sealing flap hingedly connected to the cover adjacent an edge thereof and which is adapted to be secured to one of the carton walls adjacent said edge, the sealing flap including a tear strip joined thereto by tear lines extending transversely of the sealing flap, the cover including a disengageable portion joined thereto by tear lines leading from the sealing flap tear lines to a pair of corners of the'bottom wall, and said one wall and the wall adjacent thereto including another disengageable portion joined thereto by tear lines leading to an opposite pair of corners of the bottom wall. v
5. A carton provided with hingedly connected walls including a cover, end flaps hingedly connected to such walls, a sealing flap hingedly connected to the cover adjacent an edge thereof and which is adapted to be secured to one of the car'- ton walls adjacent said edge, the sealing flap including a tear strip joined thereto by tear lines extending transversely of the sealing flap, the cover including a disengageable portion integral with said tear strip and which is joined to the cover by tear lines leading from the sealing flap tear lines and extending obliquely to a pair of corners, said one wall including a disengageable part joined thereto by transversely extending tear lines, and the wall adjacent said onewall including a disengageable part integral with said first mentioned disengageable part and which is joined to such wall by tear lines leading from the tear lines in said one wall and extending obliquely to another pair of corners opposite said first mentioned corners.
6. A carton provided with hingedly connected Walls including a cover, end flaps hingedly connected to such walls, a sealing flap hingedly connected to the cover adjacent an edge thereof and which is adapted to be secured to one of the carton walls adjacent said edge, the sealing flap including a tear strip joined thereto by tear lines extending transversely of the sealing flap, the cover including a disengageable portion integral with said tear strip and which is joined to the cover by tear lines leading from the sealing flap tear lines and extending obliquely to a pair of corners, said one wall being formed with disengageable parts joined thereto by transversely extending tear lines having portions which coincide with the sealing flap tear lines when the sealing flap is secured to said one wall, a cut extending between the tear lines in said one wall whereby when the tear strip is disengaged one of the disengageable parts in said one wall will be disengaged therewith, and the wall adjacent said one wall including a disengageable part integral with another disengageable part in said one wall and which is joined to such wall by tear lines leading from the tear lines in said one wall and extending obliquely to another pair of corners opposite said first mentioned corners.
7. A carton provided with hingedly connected walls including a cover, end flaps hingedly connected to such walls, a sealing flap hingedly con-' nected to the cover adjacent an edge thereof and which is adapted to be secured to one of the carton walls adjacent said edge, the sealing flap including a tear strip joined thereto by tear lines extending transversely of the sealing flap, the cover including a disengageable portion integral with said tear strip and which is joined to the cover by tear lines leading from the sealing flap tear lines and extending obliquely to a pair of corners, said one wall being formed with disengageable parts joined thereto by transversely extending tear lines having portions which coincide with the sealing flap tear lines when the sealing flap is secured to said one wall, a cut extending between the tear lines in said one wall whereby when the tear strip is removed one of the disengageable parts in said one wall will be disengaged therewith, the cut being shaped to provide an extension on another disengageable part in said one wall, and the wall adjacent said one wall including a disengageable part integral with the latter disengageable part and which is joined to such wall by tear lines leading from the tear lines in said one wall and extending obliquely to another pair of corners opposite said first mentioned corners.
8. A carton blank comprising four hingedly connected wall portions, a sealing flap hingedly connected to one of the wall portions, a pair of tear lines extending transversely in the sealing flap. tear lines extending obliquely in said one wall portion from the sealing flap tear lines to the adjacent corners at one edge of the adjacent wall portion, the wall portion connected to the opposite edge of said adjacent wall portion having tear lines extenfding obliquely to the comers opposite said first mentioned corners, and the final wall portion having tear lines extending transversely therein and leading to the last mentioned oblique tear lines.
9. A carton blank comprising a wall having a pair of opposite edges to each of which is hingedly connected one of a pair of opposite walls, a pair of tear lines in one of such opposite walls extending obliquely to the corners of the hinge connection edge for such wall, and a pair of tear lines in the other of such opposite walls also extending obliquely to the corners of the hinge connection edge for such wall.
10. A carton blank comprising a wall having a pair of opposite edges to each of which is hingedly connected one of .a pair of opposite walls, a
