In my prior Patent No. 2,578,776, granted December 18, 1951, there is shown a foldable fiber container made from a single blank which is slit and scored so as to provide when assembled for use a fiber container having a bottom, front, rear, side members and end members all of which are integrally connected to said bottom. The rear and front sides have slots extending upwardly from the bottom midway between the ends thereof. Partition members carried by rear half wall sections extend through the slot in the rear wall and have flaps for extending through the slot in the front wall for tying said front and rear walls together. There are cover members formed integral with the rear and front walls. The present invention has to do with an improvement in the cover arrangement in a heavy duty fiber container of the above construction.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type with cover members which are hingedly supported at the ends of the container, and fold downwardly longitudinally of the container into closed position.
A further object is to provide supporting members for the cover when in closed position which are formed integrally with the front and rear side members and are folded inwardly so as to rest on said partitions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the cover members are hinged to rectangular pieces of fiber board shaped to conform to an end member of the container and adapted to snugly fit within the container body at the inner face of each end member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein said cover members are provided with flaps at the free ends thereof which are adapted to extend down between the partition members for holding the cover in closed position.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of a body blank which has been cut and scored for providing the body portion of the improved container;
Figure 2 is a blank which has been cut and scored to provide a cover member, the end supporting member for the cover and the cover flap;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective showing the blank illustrated in Figure 1 as partially folded for use with the partition members carried by the rear half sections extending through the slot in the rear member and the cover supporting flap which is formed integrally with the rear member turned down into supported relation with the partitions;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective similar to Figure 3 but showing the body members as more nearly assembled with the flaps on the partitions extending through the slot in the front wall and turned back onto the front wall; also showing the cover supporting member carried by the front wall and folded down onto the partition members;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the improved container with the cover members in place and one of the cover members closed; and
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the container showing a sealing strip which may be applied to the covers for securing them in closed position.
Referring in detail to the illustrated embodiment of the invention.
In Figure 1 there is shown a body blank which is scored and cut to provide a bottom member I having a rear wall member 2 formed integral therewith and separated from the body member by a score line 3. This rear wall member is slotted as indicated at 4 intermediate the ends thereof and the slot extends from the bottom member to the upper end of the rear wall. There is a flap 5 formed integral with the rear wall 2 at the upper edge thereof.
The blank is also provided with a front wall member 6 which is separated from the bottom by a score line 1. This front wall member is provided with a slot 8 which extends from the bottom wall upwardly but terminates short of the upper edge of said front wall. This slot is disposed intermediate the ends of the front wall member. This front wall member also carries a flap 9. The bottom member I is integral with the end Wall members [0 and H and also separated therefrom by score lines l2, l2. The end member [0 has formed integral therewith a half rear wall member [3 which is separated from the end member I0 by a score line It and it is also separated from the rear wall member 2 by a slit [5. There is a similar half rear wall member l6 formed integral with the end member H and separated therefrom by a score line ll.
The end member I0 has formed integral therewith and extending laterally therefrom a half side wall member H! which is separated from the end wall I0 by a score line l9. This half side wall member I8 is provided with a laterally extending flap 2!] which is separated therefrom by a score line 2|. The end wall II has formed integral therewith a half side wall member 22 which is separated therefrom by a score line 23. This half front wall member carries a flap 2t which is separated therefrom by a score line 25.
The half rear side wall member l3 has formed integrally therewith a partition member 26 which is separated therefrom by a score line 21. This partition member carries a flap 28 separated therefrom by a score line 29. The half rear side wall member I i carries a partition member 3!] separated therefrom by a score line 3 l. The partition member 30 carries a flap 32 separated therefrom by a score line 33. The body blank is also provided with slits i5, I and 15 which separate the front and rear side wall members from the half side wall members l3, l6, l8 and 22 respectively. The body blank may be shipped in the flat to the packer and the blank cut and scored as described above may be readily assembled into a container body in the manner shown in Figures 3 and 4. The end members l0 and l l are folded upwardly at the respective score lines I2, 12 to a position at right angles to the bottom wall member I. The rear side wall member 2 is likewise folded to an upright position after which the half rear wall member I6 is folded to a position at the rear of the wall member 2 and the partition member carried thereby is inserted through the slot 4 in the rear wall. Likewise the rear half wall section [3 is folded along the score line I4 and the partition member 26 carried thereby is inserted through the slot 4. The front wall member 6 is then folded upwardly to a vertical position and the partition flaps 2B and 32 extended through the slot 8 in said front wall member and these fiaps 28 and 32 are folded back fiat against the outer face of the front wall section. This will tie together the front and rear walls so that they cannot spread or separate when the container is loaded.
The half front wall sections 18 and 22 are now folded along the front wall member 6 and the flaps 20 and 24 are inserted through the slot 8 and in between the partition members 26 and 36. These flaps will be frictionally gripped by the partition members and will be held firmly in their assembled position. However, a sealing strip illustrated at 34 may be applied to the outer half wall sections for preventing any possible withdrawal of the flaps from between the partitions. When these half front wall members are in assembled position they will hold the flaps 28 and 32 firmly in their folded position against the outer face of the front wall and thus it is that the body of the container when assembled is firmly held in said assembled relation.
The flap 5 carried by the rear wall 2 is folded down onto the partitions as shown in Figure 4. Likewise the flap 9 carried by the front wall member B is folded down onto the partitions. The partitions support these flaps 5 and 9 and they form a very substantial support for the cover members which will now be described.
In Figure 2 there is shown a blank which is cut and scored to provide a half cover member 35, said cover member is formed integral with a rectangular fiber piece 36 and separated therefrom by a hinge or score line 31. This rectangular fiber section 36 is shaped to conform to the inside surface of the end member with which it is associated. The ends of the flaps 5 and 9 are cut away diagonally so as to provide sufficient space to permit the fiber section 36 to be forced down into the container in contact with the inner face of the end wall. The score line 31 when the fiber section 36 is in place lies substantially at the upper edge of the end wall and therefore the cover can fold down along this score line as a. hinge onto the supporting members 5 and 9. There are two cover members one of which is indicated at and the other at 38. They are both of the same construction and made from similar blanks such as shown in Figure 2. These cover sections have flaps 39 and 40 which extend down between the partition members when the covers are in closed position. These flaps are of the length corresponding to the distance between the supporting fiaps 5 and 9 so that they may pass downward therebetween and between the partition members. The containers after being packed and the covers folded down into place may be sealed by a sealing strip 4| as shown in Figure 6.
From the above it will be noted that a heavy duty fiber container has been constructed which is formed from three separate flat blanks scored and slit so as to form when assembled a very strong body wherein the front and side walls are tied together by partition members which separate the body portion into two cells of equal capacity. This body portion may be held in assembled position without stitching of any character and therefore it may be easily disassembled into a fiat blank for return shipment after use. The body portion of the container is assembled from one of the blanks and the covers are made in duplicate from the other blank. After the body is assembled the cover supporting members may be quickly placed and the container is ready for packing. There are times when it is desired to inspect the contents of one of the cells without opening the other and this can be readily accomplished when the covers are half sections and independently folded downwardly to closed position.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A foldable heavy duty container, comprising a bottom wall, front, rear and end walls formed integral therewith, said front and rear walls having slots extending upwardly from the bottom wall and disposed midway between the ends of said Walls, front and rear half side walls sections formed integral with each end wall, a partition member formed integral with each rear wall half section, said partition members extending through the slot in the rear wall and having flaps extending through the slot in the front wall, said flaps being folded flat against the outer face of the front wall and held firmly against said front wall by the front half side wall sections, each front wall section having a flap adapted to extend through the slot in the front wall and between said partition members, said front wall and said rear wall having flaps extending the full length thereof and adapted to fold down onto the partition members and serving as cover supports, a cover supporting member disposed within the container body in contact with the inner faces of each end member and a cover member hingedly carried thereby and adapted to fold downwardly onto said cover supporting flaps, the free ends of said cover members meeting at said partitions and having flaps adapted to extend downwardly between the partition members.
