402,782. Screw propellers. GILL, J. H. W., 33, Earl's Court Gardens, London. May 30, 1932, No. 15337. [Class 114.] In screw rotors, such as propellers, pumps and turbines, the pitch at the working edge of each blade varies radially so that the product of the pitch multiplied by the radius either has a minimum value at a position whose radial distance from the axis is not greater than the normal design mid-blade radius and increases from such value both inwards toward the boss and outward toward the blade tip, or in the limiting case is constant at all radii. Also the width of each blade either decreases radially both inwards and outwards from a maximum value at a radial position not greater than the normal mid-blade radius, or is constant at all radii. The six-bladed rotor A has its blades carried by a boss B of radius approximately .43 of the tip radius. The pitch at the working edge C is given by a curve D of which the abscissµ are radial distances. The curve E on the same basis indicates the width of the blade. The surfaces containing the leading and following edges H, C are preferably symmetrically disposed in respect to the central line and the thickest portion of the section is indicated by chain lines J, representing such thickness. The blades may be mounted so as to be capable of a five degree adjustment. Specification 348,032* is referred to.
