Abstract
710,938. Turbine and compressor blades. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 7, 1952 [Jan. 16, 1951], No. 1242/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXII] A rotor blade for an axial-flow turbine or compressor of a gas-turbine engine has a stiffener piece 15 formed as a plate separate from the blade and secured at the tip of the blade as by welding, one edge 15a of the stiffener being curved to the shape of the concave surface of the blade, and the other edge 15b being parallel to the line joining the leading and trailing edges of the blade at the blade tip. A step or groove 12, 13 is formed at the blade tip by an edge milling operation, and the stiffener piece has the shape of a segment of the milling cutter 14. The axis 14a of the milling cutter is inclined to the spanwise axis 11a of the blade. The stiffener piece may be formed of greater length than required, the excess metal 15c being removed after securing in position. The stiffener piece lies at an angle to the tangent to the surface of the surrounding shroud ring.
