Abstract

512,487. Screw fans. McINTYRE, J. T., March 5, 1938, Nos. 6981/38, 27168/38 and 3561/39 (divided out of 515,469). [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A screw propelling apparatus comprises an impeller 3 having blades of aerofoil cross section of increasing width from tip to hub and of decreasing geometric pitch from tip to hub in combination with an inlet guide vane assembly 4 co-axial with the impeller the blades of which also have a decreasing geometric pitch from tip to hub. Curvature of the blade section is constant or increases from tip to hub whilst the relative thickness of the blade sections increases from tip to hub. With this apparatus may be used an outlet guide vane assembly 5 the helical pitch of which at least in the tip section is the same as that of the impeller blades. The complete assembly may be placed within a casing 10. When applied to a screw propeller the casing may be carried by the fixed inlet vanes 4 and its section 13 be' of streamline form and extended to include the propeller blades 3. Alternatively it may stop short of the blades 3 and in that case the diameter of the guide vane system may be less than the diameter of the screw propeller.
