Abstract

429,958. Screw propellers. MARSHALL, J., 4, Westbourne Gardens, Glasgow, and WINSOR AXIA FANS, Ltd., 9, Victoria Street, Westminster. March 27, 1934, No. 9574. [Class 114] A screw propeller or fan is provided with two or more blades of which the width decreases and the angle of inclination to the plane of rotation increases from the tip to the hub and the blades are of aerofoil section. Blades 11 are secured to the boss constituted by a disc 7 with bracing ribs 10, connecting inner and outer rims 8, 9. The blades are of aerofoil section and the tips 19 are rounded the peripheral edge 17 being circular and adapted to fit closely within a casing 1 which through struts 2 carries a driving motor 4. The casing also contains stationery vanes 13 which are largely radial but bend tangentially at 14 at their connection with the casing. These guide vanes may, however, be mounted so as to rotate slowly and to a degree depending upon an adjustable frictional retardation. The hub diameter is preferably À30 to À70 of the complete overall diameter of the propeller. More than one screw may be fitted to a single shaft.
