Abstract

Soap contains silk, sericine, or silk fibroin which has been treated with a solvent e.g. caustic alkali, liquid ammonia, or liquid sulphur dioxide, oleic or other fatty acid may be added. For example, 125 lb. of silk cocoons, culture, or spinning or weaving waste, freed or not from gum, is stirred for 10-15 mins. with 600 lb. of 38-40 DEG B<\>e caustic soda solution, and the solution stirred into 2,000 lb. of boiling soap; 120 lb. of cocinic acid (from coconut oil) may be added. Or the silk or fibroin may be dissolved in liquid ammonia or liquid sulphur dioxide, the ammonia or dioxide evaporated off, and the soluble mass remaining added to soap. Or the solution in liquid ammonia may be treated with water to form ammonium hydrate which is converted into soap in known manner. The soaps are especially suited for washing the skin, hair, and silk fabrics.
