Abstract
399,543. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., HODGSON, A. D'A., and LARNDER, H., Connaught House, Aldwych, London. April 7, 1932, No. 9937. [Class 40 (v).] An aerial system for aircraft comprises a radiating conductor or conductors having portions operating in antiphase and fed through a feeder line arranged over the whole or part of its length as a non-radiating transmission line whereby radiation is limited to the desired portions of the conductors and circulating currents in the structure of the aircraft are avoided. In one embodiment the aerial comprises two portions 1, 2, Fig. 1, stretched from wing-tip to tail, and energized in phase opposition by a non-radiating parallel wire feeder system 3. In a second embodiment two vertical tubular streamlined members 4, 5, Fig. 3, attached to the tail members replace the conductors 1, 2 of Fig. 1, and the lower member may retract into the upper or fold down along the fuselage when landing. Alternatively the tubular members may be arranged horizontally or a combination of both arrangements used with switching so that either or both pairs may be used. In a further modification a single radiating conductor 6, Figs. 5 and 7, may be used, fed in the latter case, when it is a trailing member, by a concentric non- radiating feeder system 3. The aerials may be used alternatively for reception.
