Abstract
398,920. Cables; cable joints. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd., Caxton House, Tothill Street, and RIEDL, J., 48, Waverley Road, Plumstead, both in London. April 1, 1932, No. 9424. [Classes 36 and 38 (i).] To prevent the escape of impregnating-liquid from the insulation of a cable at a joint or other place where the insulation is interrupted the insulation is " pencilled " off in conical form and enclosed in a preformed sheath of celluloid or like material which fits closely over the tapered insulation and is embedded as a thin membrane in the material of the joint. In the arrangement shown the sheath ba is formed doubly conical to fit over the two ends of the insulation and with a cylindrical middle portion enclosing a cylindrical piece of metal me recessed to receive the shaped ends re of the conductor cu. The sheath ba is formed with cylindrical ends cy fitting over the cable sheathing and it can be secured by strips of celluloid rendered adhesive by acetone. The whole is wrapped round with filling fi and enclosed in a sheath js filled with oil &c. In the case of a multicore cable the cores are separated and passed through tubular bosses tu, Fig. 3, on a diaphragm di fitting the joint sleeve sl and the separate cores are jointed as described, the cylindrical portions cy of the sheaths being connected to the bosses tu. The sleeve dis between the diaphragm and the cable sheathing Is is corrugated as shown and the sleeve sl may be corrugated longitudinally.
