Abstract
The time necessary to masticate rubber is reduced by adding to the raw rubber a composition comprising a rubber solvent having dissolved in it a small quantity of solvent activator. The solvent is preferably one which is non-volatile at the temperatures reached in mastication such as 300 DEG burning oil. The solvent activator may be a higher alcohol such as hexyl alcohol or a sulphonated hydrocarbon or fatty oil such as the sulphonation products obtained in the purification of medicinal white oil, or sulphonated castor oil. If desired a mixture of sulphonation product and higher alcohol may be used. The thermo-plasticizing composition is added in amounts from 4-8 per cent on the rubber, and may be sprinkled on the rubber before it is placed in the masticator or it may be added in the masticator.
