[Class 47 (ii).] A fire-extinguishing apparatus comprises two concentric receptacles containing liquids which on mixing form fire-extinguishing froth, each receptacle having a measuring-compartment at its lower end formed by a transverse bulkhead. As shown, transverse partitions or bulkheads g, g<1> in the lower part of the concentric receptacles b, b<1> divide them into measuring-compartments i, i<1> which are closed from communication with a mixing chamber o at the bottom of the apparatus by concentric valves d<1>, d<2> respectively, capable of being opened in succession. The capacities of the receptacles b, bl are several times those of the compartments i, i<1>. The mixing chamber o is provided with one or more nozzles o<2> for the discharge of froth and with a projecting rim o<1> to prevent the escape of liquid before it has produced froth. The stems d, d<3> of the valves d<1>, d<2> are supported respectively at their upper ends in blocks k<1>, k carrying stuffing glands n, n<1> and, after a predetermined downward movement of the head k against a spring m, when a roller j fixed thereto is depressed in any convenient manner to open the valve d<2>, the head k<1> is depressed to open the other valve d<1>, a collar l connected to the head k<1> compressing a spring m<1>. The springs m, m<1> close the valves d<1>, d<2> when action on the roller j ceases. Vent tubes h, h<1> are provided for the escape of air from the chambers i, i<1> and these lead into filling caps r, r<1> by which the receptacles b, b<1> may be refilled after the cover s has been removed. Balls u prevent the escape of liquid through the vent holes r<5>, r<7> when the apparatus is inverted. The mixing chamber o may be detached by removing a stirrup strap p held in place by a screw q. The internal surfaces of the apparatus are protected from the liquids by a protective varnish or coating.
