983,326. Filling containers. A. NAECKER, E. ORTMANN, A.-L. SEEMANN, and N. BALTES, [trading as ORTMANN & HERBST]. July 18, 1962 [July 20, 1961; Dec. 23, 1961], No. 27671/62. Heading B8T. A counter-pressure filling-head comprises an outlet tube 8 enabling air to be discharged from a bottle 5, a tube 9 secured to the tube 8, a tube 11 having a flange 12 slidable on the tube 8 and provided with openings 16, and an aperture 14 in a bottom member 13 which may be closed by a ball 10. A valve element 4a is operated mechanically to admit liquid through a passage 3 into the bottle from a vessel 2. A venting valve 3b enables the interior of the bottle to be connected to atmosphere. A gas valve is provided at 7a, and a filter at 2a. Operation.-After a bottle is applied to the filling head, valve 7a is opened to equalize pressure in the vessel 2 and container 5. The aperture 14 being closed by the ball 10, the gas pressure forces down the valve members 11-13 against the action of a spring 15, thereby forming a gap at 18, Fig. 3. Gas enters the bottle through the openings 16. The spring 15 returns the valve members 11-13 when pressure in the bottle equals that in the vessel 2, thereby closing the gap at 18. Valve element 4a is opened to fill liquid into the bottle, the displaced gas unseating the ball 10 sufficiently to escape via the tube 8 as shown in Fig. 1. As the liquid reaches the level of the aperture 14, a gas cushion is formed in the bottle neck, and liquid enters the aperture 14, so accelerating the escaping gas and blowing the ball 10 to a position, Fig. 2 (not shown), where it closes the lower end of the tube 8. The gas escape being blocked, the liquid supply to the bottle stops. Valve element 4a is raised to close the passage 3 and the ball 10 falls on to the aperture 14. The valve 3b is opened, thereby venting the bottle. The higher pressure in the tube 8 causes the valve members 11-13 to be lowered and clear the valve of gas and residual liquid through the apertures 16. The bottle may then be replaced. Modifications.-Two modifications of the lower valve elements, Figs. 4-7 and Figs. 8- 11, respectively (not shown), are described.
