This invention relates to non-refillable containers, and particularly 'to bottles intended for receiving high quality beverages such, as for instance, spirituous liquors.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a closure. which in the normal upright position of the bottle "will tend to seal the'latter owing'to the gravity induced position of a slidablevalve.
Another object of the invention is'to'provide in association with a non-refillable-container, a closure wherein a weight appended to a flexible fastening member connected to' the slidable'valve will cause the valve to slide in 'a predetermined direction and seal the inlet for air and liquid whenever the container is inclined to inverted position or placed horizontally.
It'is'in general an object of the invention to prevent the introduction 'of liquid and also seal the'inlet for air on the container whenever the container is placed in a position differ'entfrom upright position, and at the sametime an attempt isma'de'to introduce liquid into the same.
The invention is "described in the following specification with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is an outer elevational view of a bottle neck provided with the closure according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the closure and bottle neck of Fig. 1 in normal or upright position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to that of Fig. 2, showing the bottle of which the neck only is indicated in inclined inverted position;
Fig. 4 is a detail elevation for a casing portion of the closure;
Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of a valve carrying member of the closure;
Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of the valve and a weight connected with the valve as well as a sleeve connected with the valve and adapted to limit the movement of said weight;
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the assembly of elements illustrated in elevation in Figs. 5 and 6.
The non-refillable closure comprises a casing I of cylindrical or square cross-section which is open at its lower end and is reduced in its upper portion as by the provision of a shoulder 30. This casing I may be made of metal having a coating of tin on its inner surface, or it may be produced of plastic material which is proof against alcohol. The casing l is retained in position upon the mouth of the bottle by a metal strap 5' which hugs the casing very closely was to completelysurround-thesame with the exception of the very 'top portion thereof and also extending below said casing'to be fitted to thebottleneck 4'. The opening 8 in'the-top of the casing i" may be-closed by acorkor other plug 31 and the lower face of the casing is supported on the mouth of the bottle, while an annular packing 3' isinterposed between-the bottle and'the casing.
A valve carrying member l2 isdisposed within the-casing -I "and'separated from the inner face-of "the casing by an annular interspace 33. The lower' portion of the valve carryingmember I -Z' fits'the'interior'of the mouthof the bottle neck 4, and this valve-carrying member, furthermore, is providedwith a flange '3! between the-upper'port-ion of the reduced size and the lower portion of a size -to fit 4 the interior of the mouth of the bottle. The flange-3| of the valve carrying member also rests on the annular pack ing-interposed between thebottle mouth and the casing l". For this-purposathe casing I is provided on-its lowerf ace witha-recess 32 into which the flange 3| is 'adap'ted to fit. -The upper :end of the valve carryingimember l2:.is closedby a wall 33, and a plurality of openings 18 isprovided' ab'ove the flanged! ofsaid member.
A valve I i comprisingza solid: body is slidably mounted in the interior 34 of the valve carrying member I2. The lower portion of the valve carrying member is provided with internal threads 35 for engagement with the screw threads on a sleeve 36 inserted into the lower portion of the valve carrying member and holding the body of the valve l'l' against withdrawal from the interior of said valve carrying member. The sleeve 36 also is provided with an annular series of openings 16 to admit liquid into said sleeve from the interior of the bottle. Upon movement of the valve body I I away from the position shown in Figs. 2 and 7, this liquid having found access into the interior of the sleeve 36 will then be able to flow through the openings it of the valve carrying member l2 into the annular space 38 of the casing to be discharged through the opening 8. A position in which a path for the liquid through the openings it and it is freed is indicated in Fig. 3.
A screw-threaded stem 2| secured in the body of the valve IT projects into the sleeve 36, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and '7, and this stem is in pivotal connection with a link 22, the other end of which link is pivotally connected with the weight 23'. The length of the projecting portion of the stem 21' and of the link 22' and the pe taining portion of the weight 23 are selected in such manner that in upright position the weight appears beneath the lower opening of the sleeve 36, while upon inversion of the bottle to the position shown in Fig. 3, said weight will be in engagement with the lower edge portion of the sleeve 36. The weight 23 is of double frustoconical shape with its larger section at the center. At this central section of maximum area, the diameter of the weight is greater than that of the opening of the sleeve 36. Owing to this shape of the weight 23', the weight will remain seated on the lower edge of the sleeve 36, in sealing relation thereto when the bottle is inverted, as shown in Fig. 3.
In this position of the bottle, the valve l1 will slide downwardly in the valve: carrying member [2 until it engages the wall 33 of said member. In this movement, the sliding valve l'l carries with it the assembly of elements 2!, 22' and 23', while freeing the openings l6 and 18'. The atmospheric air may then enter through these openings and thereby facilitate the pouring of the contents from the bottle through other openings of the same series.
If upon placing the bottle in the position shown in Fig. 3, an attempt should be made to inject liquid by pressure through the opening 8 in the casing I, this liquid having passed under pressure, the openings I8, will act upon the weight 23' to push the same upwardly away from the free edge of the sleeve 36' to move thereby the valve ll into a position in which it obstructs the openings [8, as shown in Fig. '7. Obviously the.
same movement of the valve l1 will take place when the bottle has been placed in horizontal position and an attempt is made to inject liquid under pressure through the opening 8' in the casing.
It is understood that the shape of the closure device as well as the nature of the material of which it is made may be varied without altering thereby the essential character of the invention within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
1. A closure for non-refillable containers, comprising an outer casing adapted to rest on the container mouth, a metal strap which inviolably secures the casing on the container mouth, a valve-carrying member closed at its top end and opened at its lower end and which is provided at its middle portion with an annular'flange resting on the container mouth and fitting with the lower edge of the casing there providing an annular space between the valve-carrying member and the casing, a sleeve threaded within the lower portion of the valve-carrying member and providing an annular space between the sleeve and the container neck, a series of side openings in the valve-carrying member above the flange, a valve fitted and slidable within the valve-carrying member and adapted to seat on the upper edge of the sleeve, a series of side openingsat the projecting portion of the sleeve, and a weight flexibly connected to the valve and adapted to laterally fall beyond the lower end of the sleeve.
2. A closure for non-refillable containers, comprising an annular packing placed on the container mouth, an outer casing adapted to rest on the packing, a metal strap which inviolably secures the casing on the container mouth, a valve-carrying member closed at its upper end and opened at its lower end and which is provided at its middle portion with an annular flange resting on the packing and fitting with the lower edge of the casing thereby providing an annular space between the valve-carrying member and the casing, a sleeve threaded within the lower portion of the valve-carrying member and providing an annular space between the sleeve and the container neck, a series of side openings in the valve-carrying member adjacent the annular flange and above same, a valve adjusted within the upper portion of the valve-carrying member and providing an air chamber between same and the upper portion of the valve-carrying member to run within same and adapted to seat on the upper edge of the sleeve, a series of side openings at the projecting portion of the sleeve, and a weight flexibly connected to the valve and adapted to laterally fall beyond the inner end of the sleeve.
