This application is a division of United States application Serial No. 435,710 now Patent No. 2,318,382, dated May 4, 1943.

This closure is composed of a casing I, either cylindrical or of square section, which is opened at its lower end and extended above in a portion of reduced diameter 2, and the same is preferably made of an interiorly tinned metal or of an alcohol-proof plastic material, said casing being placed, on, an annular packing 3 disposed on the; upper; edge of. the bottle 4 and bein retained in; position by a metal strap 5 fitted on, a shoulder 6 formed on the neckv of bottle 4 and on; the conical or pyramidal portion 7 joining the. casing I and its reduced portion 2.
The reduced portion] has its upper end closed and provided with a; pass opening 8, and the conical or pyramidal portion 1 has an inner annular flange 9 whose; aperture, has threads II] to engage the threaded: section II of a valve-carrying cylindrical member I2 Whose lower half portion is of a thicker wall; to provide an upper valve seat I3 and is provided with, a horizontal flange M extending outwards. to form a stop against the inner flange 9 of the casing beneath same, whereby the member I2 can be threadedly inserted, within the; casing I while, the latter ha not yet been placed on the bottle 4.
The lower half portion of said valve-carrying cylindrical member I2 has a lower opening I5 and a series of side openings, I6 in circular arrangement at; its peripheral wall. The upper half; portion of said, valve-carrying cylindrical member I2 is of a Wall thinner than the wall of the lower half portion and is opened above, the same being adapted. to receive. the slidable valve I'I whichfits, into; same and when resting on the.
seat I3 covers a series of small openings I8 7 formed in, circular arrangement in said upper member I2; isalso spaced from the casing I to provide an annular space 20.
As the bottle I is placed in an inverted or inclined position to empty it, the closure parts are placed in; the position; indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, that, is, the cap 24 slides down until its raised edge 25 strikes, against, the closed end of section 2 of the casing, thereby uncovering the series of small openings I8, and the valve I! also slides down until it strikes against the closed outer end of cap 24 and carries along with it by means of the link 22 the weight 23 until resting on the edge of opening I5, whereby outer air has free acess through outer opening 8, notches 26 of cap 24, annular space I9, openings I8, inner hollow of cylindrical member, openings I6 and annular space 20, while the inner liquid in bottle 4 finds its way out through the side openings I6 from the annular space 20, entering into the valve-carrying cylindrical member I2, leav- 3 ing the latter through the small openings I8, and finally circulating through annular space I9 and notches 26 toward the outlet 8.
Assuming the bottle in its inverted or inclined position, if an attempt should be made to inject liquid by pressure through opening 8, the liquid will enter and push inwardly the cap 24 and the valve I1, whereupon it will shut ofi the communication between annular space I9 and the inside of the valve-carrying cylindrical member I2 through small opening I8. If the bottle 4 is placed in horizontal position, or if in this position the bottle is submerged in a filled tank for re-filling purposes, to facilitate the egress of inner air, the weight 23 being adapted to drop freely, in virtue of its own weight and the conical shape of both of its ends, it will slide on the edge of opening IE, drop into the inner space of casing I (Fig. 8) and pull valve I! which, therefore, will slide inwards and obturate the series of small openings I3, thereby interrupting the egress of inner air and the entry of outer liquid, The valve I! has interiorly threaded a screw 2I to which is pivotally connected a link 22 from which is dependent by pivotal connection a loose weight 23 which remains depending across and beneath the opening I5. Said weight 23 is of double frustoconical shape with its larger section at the centre and having there a diameter greater than that of opening I and its ends sharpened so that in the inclined or inverted position of the bottle (Fig. 3) it will remain seated on the edge of opening I5, thereby sealing the latter.
Preferably, the upper half portion of the valvecarrying member I2 will carry adjustable and slidable mounted thereon a cap 24 opened below and closed above, which has a raised upper edge 25 provided with a series of notches 26 forming a sort of crown.
The functional operation of this closure is as follows: In th upright or normal position of the bottle 4 (Fig. 2) no access is had into the bottle 4, due to that the valve I'I rests by its own weight on the seat IS with the aid of the depending Weight 23 connected thereto, and the cap 24 also rests by its own weight on the intermediate pro jecting portion of the member I 2 covering thereby all the small openings I8 in the upper half portion of the member [2, thereby rendering impossible the refilling of the bottle 4 in its upright position.
It is obvious that the shape of the closure de vice as well as the nature of the material of which same is made may be varied, without by this reason. the essential character of the invention being considered as altered, within the scope of the claims hereinafter.
What I claim is:
1. In a closure device for rendering bottles nonrefillable, when attached to the mouth of the same, the combination of an outer casing with openings at its top and bottom and adapted to rest with its bottom against the mouth of the bottle, a cylindrical valve carrying member within said casing and having its intermediate portion fixedly connected with an intermediate portion of the casing, said valve carrying member having tubular end portions projecting from its intermediate portion in opposite directions and providing annular spaces between said end portions and the casing, said cylindrical valve carrying member having a valve seat between its ends and the walls of the tubular end portion of said valve carrying member being provided with openings at each side of said valve seat, a valve slidable by gravity within one projecting tubular end portion of the valve carrying member, a weight extending from the other tubular end portion of the valve carrying member and being flexibly connected with said valve, and a cap slidable on the projecting tubular end portion containing said valve and adapted to free and obstruct respectively the openings in said last named prolecting tubular end portion of the valve carrying member, and means for inviolably securing said outer casing to the neck of the bottle.
2. In a closure device for rendering bottles nonrefillable, when attached to the mouth of the same, the combination of an outer casing with openings at its top and bottom and adapted to rest with its bottom against the mouth of the bottle, a cylindrical valve carrying member fixed within said outer casing, and a valve movable in said valve carrying member, said outer casing having a stop flange at the end opposite its mounting end on the mouth of the bottle and being provided with an inwardly extending flange between its top and bottom, the valve carrying member being fixed between its ends to said inwardly extending flange of said outer casing and having tubular projections extending from the point of attachment to said flange in opposite directions into the casing, each of said projecting portions of the valve carrying member being provided with a plurality of peripherally spaced openings, said valve carrying member having a valve seat intermediate said pluralities of peripherally spaced openings, said valve being slidable in one tubular projection of the valve carrying member, a weight being flexibly connected With the valve and projecting from the opposite tubular projection of the valve carrying member, and a hood slidable over that tubular projection of the valve carrying member containing said valve, said hood being movable between the inwardly extending flange and the stop flange of said outer casing and being adapted in one end position to obstruct the peripherally spaced openings in that tubular projection containing said valve and being limited in its movement in the opposite direction by said stop flange of the outer casing, and means for inviolably securing the outer casing to the neck of the bottle.
