*HENRYGODDARDTUCK, or SYDNEY, New SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
" I new-scam 's'roPBnIli-FoaBorT Esa To all whom it may concern: 7
Be 1t known that I, HENRY GODDARD Took, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain and Ireland, residing at Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the stopperingof bottlesand refers essentially' to a means of preventing or rendering difficult the fraudulent refilling of bottles such as in the ordinary way containthe higher grades or kinds of spirituous liquors such as whisky or other beverages or liquids,
a valve of glass or its equivalent adapted to seat in said groove andhaving on its under face a weighting and centering stem and 1 on its upper face a concentric recess into .which is adapted to take a guide'tonguede pending from a domed and perforatedcap that rests on an elastic washer surrounding the mouth of the bottle; a centrally perforated disk overlying the valve and restcapsule.
ing on the bottlemouth and adapted to move on the said guide tongue; ,a disk adapted toexternally cover the perforations 1n the domed cap, and a strong covermg may be clearly understood reference will now be made to the drawings which accom pany and form part of this complete specification and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a bottle neck showing the improved stopping appliance fitted in themouth thereof Fig. 2 is side elevation of domed cap. a Fig, 3 is top plan of same. 1 i
Fig. 4 is-centrally perforated disk.
Fig. 5 is elastic washer to be placed on" flange surrounding bottle mouth.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are respectively a top plan, anunderneath plan, and a side elevation of valve. i i
Fig. 9 is external coveringdisk of domed cap. I a The bottle neck 1 has at its mouth an annular cupped seating 10 of sufficient depth to retain a small quantity of liquid. The valve 11 rests in the seating 10 and is weighted and centered the neck-of the bottle by stem 12. which may lee-radial as shown, or of any other well known construcsition and sealing'the bottle.
But in order that the invention which will allow the liquid to pass. \On 1 the top face of the valve-11 a concentric recess orjcavity 13 is formed. Overlying the valve 11 and resting on the top edge of the bottle mouth is a disk 14; having a concentric preferably of cork, and on this washer rests .the lower'edge of a domed cap 18 that has perforations 19'and a downwardly projecting tongue 20 which passes through aperfipmfimt 9 et r en;-
Patented Feb; 245, 1920. Application iiidjiiecember 2s, 1918; 'Seria1 11026812081 1 ture 15 in disk 14and centers recess 13 in 1 V valve 11. A disk 21 is placed on the top ofcap 18 so as to cover the perforations 19. The center portion which is removed from cork disk to form the .washer17 can be suitover thecap and spun orotherwisedrawn into close" contact with the cap and bottle neck thus securing the appliances in poably and economically utilized for the coveringdisk 21. A strong metal capsule 22 of, sheet aluminum or the like is placed v so- Inv operation when it is desired to unseal the bottle the covering disk 21' is removed by cutting the capsule between the disk 21 and theitop of the cap 18, The perforations 19 in cap 18 are then exposedwhile at the same time the cap 18 is'still heldfirmly in position by reason of the close fitting capsule surrounding it. When the bottle is tilted the pressure of liquid "therein causes the valve 11 to leave its seat 10 and move along the guide tongue 20 carrying with it the disk 14: (as shown 'in dotted lines Fig. 1) thus leaving an annular space throughwhich the liquid passes to the perforations 19 in top of cap 18 through the lower half of which it escapes from the bottle while air enters the bottle through the upper perforations thus insuring a strong and uniform flow. When, the .bottle is brought into the vertical position again "the 'valve and disk drop into position, the
former being sealed and the latter preventing any interference with the valve through the perforations 19, a boss or the like 23 is provided at the root of'the guide tongue 20 to prevent the washer 14 cominginto contact with the top of the cap when the bottle istilted and blocking the perforations,
