CLOSURE FOR NONREFILLABLE CONTAINERS Filed April 22, 1946 A from Ens.
Patented May 20, 1947 CLOSURE FOR NONREFILLABLE CONTAINERS Jose Soto del Llano, Habana, Cuba, assignor of one-fourth to Ricardo More Ferrer, Habana,
Cuba
Application April 22, 1946, Serial No. 663,941 In Cuba. October 26, 1945 2 Claims. (01. 215- 23) This invention relates to closures for nonrefillable containers and particularly to the closure of that kind which was the subject-matter of United States Patent No. 2,318,382, issued May 4, 1943, to the present applicant, and it has for its object to provide a certain improvement therein, consisting in providing certain improved construction details which render the closure more light and more easy and economical to manufacture, as well as more safe against violations for refilling purposes.
The invention is described with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, of which:
Fig. 1 is an outer elevational partly broken View of a bottle neck provided with the closure embodying the improvement of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a diametral vertical sectional view of the closure and bottle neck in the normal or upright position of the bottle.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to that of Fig. 2, showing the bottle in an inclined or inverted position;
Fig. 4 is an outer detail elevation view of the valve carrying member, the valve and the weight.
Fig. 5 is a detail elevation view of the upper section of the valve carrying member.
Fig. 6 is a lower plan view of the upper section of the valve carrying member.
Fig. '7 is a detail elevation View of the sleeve forming the lower section of the valve carrying member.
Fig. 8 is a lower plan view of said sleeve.
Fig. 9 is a perspective detailed view of the valve and its weight.
The closure of this invention comprises an inferiorly ope-n cylindrical casing I tapering upwardly and ending at its top in a short neck provided with a central opening 2 and ending inferiorly in an annular rib 25 projecting downwardly. The top opening 2 is adapted to be closed by a cork 3, and the casing I has a lower enlarged portion provided with a Vertical depending flange I by which it rests on the horizontal lower flange 4 of the upper cylindrical section 5 of the valve carrying member, which section remains spaced apart from the casing I to provide a hollow space 6 therebetween. The upper section 5 is provided with an annular series of openings I directly above the horizontal flange the valve carrying member having another lower cylindrical section in the shape of a sleeve H provided with a top horizontal flange I! on which the lower horizontal flange 4 of the firstly 2 mentioned section 5 is adapted to rest, the edges of both flanges II and 4 fitting against the inner surface of the depending flange I which in turn 7 rests on the annular packing I3 disposed directly on the upper edge of the bottle I4 and on which rests the horizontal flange I! of the sleeve I I. The sleeve II has a top rib I8 projecting above the horizontal flange 4 and fitting within the lower end of the upper section 5, and the sleeve I I has at its lower depending portion a plurality of side openings I2.
A cylindrical valve 8 is slidably mounted within the upper cylindrical section 5 of the valve carrying member, which valve is completely hollow and closed on top and below and rests on the annular rib I8 of the sleeve II. The valve 8 has at its top portion an outer rib I9 with alternate entries and projections through which it is adapted to form an air chamber between said top por tion of the valve and the top portion of the section 5 of the valve carrying member thereby preventing its top portion from sticking to the top portion of the upper section 5 of the valve carrying member. Said valve 8 has a central appendix 20 projecting from its lower portion downwards and which has an eye 2I which is in a flexible connection with a link 9 which in turn is flexibly connected with a weight I!) of double frustoconical shape having its largest cross-section at the center thereof which center cross-section is of a larger diameter than the inner diameter of the sleeve II, by means of a forelock 22 interlacing with thelink 9 and passing across a hole 23 formed centrally along the weight and ending oppositely to the valve in an enlarged cavity 23' adapted to receive the divergent resilient ends 22' of the forelock 22. 1
In order to prevent that an instrument as a wire may be inserted through the closure discharge opening 2 down to the openings 1 for the purpose of retaining the valve 8 raised on its seat, the upper section 5 of the valve carrying member has at its top portion an annular rib 24 to cooperate with the lower annular rib 25 of the neck in which the top portion of the casin I ends, to form two annular opposed shoulders, not in vertical alignment, which hinder the passage of such instrument therebetween.
I5 is the press-fitted metallic strap which fits above the enlarged portion I of the casing I and below the shoulder I6 formed on the bottle neck With the exception of the cork 3, the packing I3 and the strap I5, all of the closure parts'will be made from glass or a synthetic plastic material. The packing l3 will preferably be made of cork, and the strap 15 will be made of metal, preferably aluminum. 1
What I claim is:
1. A closure for non-refillable containers, comprising an annular packing placed on the container mouth, a valve carrying member composed of two cylindrical sections, viz., a lower section in the shape of a sleeve provided with a top horizontal annular flange that partly rests on said annular packing and an upper section closed at its upper end and open at its lower end where it is provided with an annular horizontal flange adapted to rest on the top horizontal flange of the lower sleeve, the upper section of the valve carrying member having a plurality of side openings adjacent the horizontal flange thereof, and the lower section of the valve carrying member having a plurality of side openings at the projecting portion of the sleeve, a hollow valve fltting within the upper section of the valve carrying member to run within same and adapted to seat on the upper edge of the sleeve, an outer casing spaced from the upper section of the valve carrying member and adapted to seat on said packing, an outer strap which inviolably secures the casing on the container mouth, and a weight flexibly connected to the valve and adapted to fall interiorly beyond the lower end of the sleeve.
2. A closure for non-refillable containers, comprising an annular packing placed on the container mouth, a valve carrying member formed by two cylindrical sections, viz., a lower section in the shape of a sleeve and provided with a top horizontal annular flange which partly rests on said annular packing and an upper section closed at its upper end and open at its lower end where it is provided with an annular horizontal flange adapted to seat on the upper horizontal flange of the lower sleeve, the upper section of the valve carrying member having a plurality of side openings adjacent the horizontal flange thereof and an outer raised rib on its top, and the lower section of the valve carrying member having a plurality of side openings at the projecting portions of the sleeve and having an upper rib projecting above the flange thereof and fitted interiorly in the lower edge of the upper section of the valve carrying member, an outer casing taperin 11D- wards and endin on top in a neck provided with a central opening having a downward inner lower rib, the casing having a lower enlarged portion ending in a depending flange adapted to seat on the annular packing and to flt the edges of the horizontal flanges of both sections of the valve carrying member, a strap that inviolably secures the casing to the top edge of the container, a weight of double frusto-conical shape with its largest cross-section at the center the diameter of which is larger than the inner diameter of the sleeve to laterally fall beyond the lower end of the sleeve, and a means for flexibly connecting the weight with the lower base of the valve.
