Abstract

A filling head for a counter-pressure machine comprises a liquid tube 6 mounted beneath a tank 1 containing liquid 2 under pressurized gas 3 and open to the tank interior when a valve means 11 is open, a gas tube 15 surrounding and spaced from tube 6, a pipe 16 offset with respect to the tube 15 and which communicates via a hole 17 in the filling head with the space between the tubes 6 and 15, and a valve control mechanism 14 which is operatively connected to said valve means 11 and also to a gas valve means 21. When a bottle moves upwardly around the tubes 6 and 15 a cam 23 turns and lifts valve 21 off its seat so allowing gas 3 to flow through pipe 16, hole 17 and the space between tubes 6 and 15 to expel air contained in the bottle through a gap between tube 15 and the bottle neck and grooves 31 to the atmosphere. By the time the bottle comes into contact with a centering bell 29 slidably mounted on the tube 15 it is purged of air and excess gas is released to atmosphere until the bell 29 is pressed with an annular seal 32 against the filling head, thereafter pressure building up within the bottle until it balances the pressure in the tank. The valve means is then lifted due to the equalized pressure under the action of a spring 33 and liquid flows by gravity into the bottle through the tube 6. During filling the valve 21 remains open and gas vents back into the tank from the bottle through the pipe 16. When the liquid in the b ttle reaches a hole 35 in the tube 15 the return of gas is halted and pressure in the bottle neck prevents further filling. The control mechanism now shuts valves 11 and 21, and a swift valve 28 opens and reduces to atmospheric pressure the gas in the bottle. When the bottle begins its downward travel the centering bell 29 is released and a passage 26 connecting the tube 6 to the atmosphere is opened. Atmosphere air enters tube 6 and drives out into the bottle liquid contained in tube 6. The filled bottle is then removed from the bell 29 for closing.
