Abstract
1,088,274. Filling casks &C. MORRISON, CARPENTER & CO. Ltd., and C. F. CARPENTER. May 13, 1964 [May 27, 1963; June 24, 1963], Nos. 21161/63 and 25059/63. Heading B8T. A liquid filling head 3 carries a sealing ring 14 for surrounding the bung hole of a cask, and a liquid supply tube T for extending to adjacent the cask base; a sleeve 12 surrounding the tube provides a gas escape passage 13 leading to an outlet 17. When the cask liquid level reaches the sleeve bottom liquid flows up the passage 13 and contacts a probe 15 which controls a solenoid valve to stop the liquid flow to the tube via bore 8 and chamber 16. When the head is applied to the cask an air inlet 9 to the chamber 16 is closed by a piston valve 19 forced upwardly against a spring 21; after filling, the head is raised and the air inlet is opened, and air passes to the chamber via a filter 10a, and residual liquid in the tube passes into the cask. The head may be swivelly suspended from a chain. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the main liquid supply valve V is controlled by a solenoid 23 carried by a framework attached to the head. A spring 31 normally urges the valve closed, but when the head is applied to a cask, the piston valve 42 controlling the air passage 41 to the top of the filling tube, is raised and a microswitch 33 operated thereby energizing the solenoid 23 and opening the valve. The head is suspended and may be raised and lowered by a motor.
