Abstract

509,101. Fire-extinguishing. CARDOX (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd. (Cardox Corporation). Oct. 1, 1938, No. 28605. [Class 47 (ii)] Apparatus for extinguishing fires by means of carbon-dioxide comprises a container or battery of containers of liquid carbon-dioxide, and means for first discharging carbon-dioxide gas, and then liquid which has been cooled below the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. Cylinders 5 are connected at the top to a header 6 and at the bottom to a header 10, the headers being connected by a three-way valve 19 to a discharge line 20. In use, the header 6 is connected to the line 20, so that gas is discharged. This discharge cools the remaining liquid in the cylinders, so that when the header 10 is connected to the line 20, this cooled liquid is discharged. The valve 19 may be a manual one, controlled by the operator when a gauge 12 indicates a certain fall in the vapour pressure of the cooled liquid. As shown, the valve is controlled automatically by a rack 26 on a piston 23 urged in one direction by a spring 24 and in the other by the vapour pressure in the cylinders acting through a pipe 6a. A valve 13 is provided in the header 10 for controlling the rate of liquid discharge.
