Abstract

396,157. Centrifugal gas - cleaners. SWAN, A., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. March 23, 1932, No. 8636. [Class 23.] A gas-cleaner, for use with an internalcombustion engine or for other purposes, has inner and outer shells A, B of different cone angles and the gas passes through the annular throat between the shells. A whirling movement is given to the gas by vanes in the part H which also serves as a flame trap. The layer of dust-laden gas which forms on the outer shell passes through the annular aperture E while the clean gas passes on between the vanes D which diminish the whirling. The dust-laden gas passes into the collector F which retains the dust while the gas passes through the filter G to re-join the main stream. The aperture forming the entrance to the dust collector may be arranged at right-angles to the direction of gas movement. A flame trap of the type described in Specification 344,806, [Group XXI], can be arranged at the entrance or exit of the cleaning device. Modified forms of shells may be used.
