Abstract
396,152. Mechanical stokers. GREENE, F. C., 1845, Illinois Merchants Bank Building, South Clark Street, Chicago, U.S.A. March 15, 1932, No. 7720. [Class 51 (i).] A furnace comprises a fire pot, a casing surrounding the fire pot, a screw member secured to the fire pot and located between the latter and the casing and adapted to convey fuel to the pot, means for feeding fuel into the space between the screw member and the casing and means for rotating the screw member. The fire pot 7, integral with an angular flange 6, a screw member 8, an ash-pit 9 and a flange or feeding hopper 10, is supported on a hollow pedestal 1 and rotated by gearing 31,32. Fuel is fed from a storage hopper 18 past an adjustable door 44 to the space between two tubes 24, 19, the inner tube being rotated by a motor 27 through gearing 25, 26. The fuel gravitates to an aperture 20 in the tube 19 through which it is expelled by a blade 241 attached to the tube 24, falling between guides 21 into the rotating feeding hopper 10. The fuel is then led by a fin 23, attached to the casing 11, to ascend the space between the helix 8 and the casing 11 and to fall over the member 14, divided into fingers 15, into the fire pot 7. Ashes escape through grate 2 and, falling into the pit 9, are led up the inside of tube 24, around a stationary helix 29, by a feeding fin 35, and escape through a shoot 45 to a collecting means. Air enters through the furnace door 42 and passages 36, 37, 38, and also by the hollow pedestal 1 through passages 4. The fuel is stated to be brought to a condition of more efficient combustion by being heated by the fire pot during its ascent of the screw 8.
