Abstract
Aromatic vinyl compounds are obtained by the elimination of hydrogen chloride from 1-chloro-1-arylethanes by heating with considerably less than the stoichiometrically calculated quantity of an organic base containing nitrogen or of a salt such as a hydrochloride and/or a molecular compound such as with inorganic or organic acids thereof, it being advantageous to remove the product continuously from the reaction chamber. In examples (1) a -chloroethylbenzene is heated with quinoline to obtain styrene; (2) a mixture of the isomers of a -chlorethyltoluene is heated with pyridine to obtain vinylmethylbenzenes; (3) a -b -dichloroethylbenzene is heated with pyridine to obtain b -chlorostyrene; (4) a -chloroethylbenzene is heated with a molecular of pyridine and zinc chloride to obtain styrene. Other bases such as quinaldine, ethylbenzylaniline, and picoline and other derivatives of a -chloroethylbenzene may also be used.
