Abstract

Wetting-agents, applications of; cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing.--Artificial silk comprising cellulose acetate or other acyl, alkyl or aralkyl derivative of cellulose is delustred by treatment at an elevated temperature with an emulsion, of less than 5 per cent concentration, of pine oil, i.e. an oil in which terpineols are the main constituents. The pine oil exerts a powerful wetting and swelling action and assists the penetration of dyestuffs. Specified emulsifying agents are turkey red oils, sulphonated fish oils and highly sulphonated castor oil. The following examples are specified. (1) 10 lbs. of cellulose acetate or benzyl cellulose artificial silk is delustred by treatment for \ba1/2\be-\ba3/4\be hr. at 80-90 DEG C. in a bath containing in 20 gallons of water 2 lbs. of an emulsion of 25 parts by weight of pine oil, 25 parts by weight of turkey red oil and 50 parts by weight of water. (2) The artificial silk is similarly treated in a bath containing in 20 gallons of water 1 lb. of an emulsion of 75 parts of pine oil and 25 parts of turkey red oil.
