[Class 29.] A cooling element a of a refrigerating- apparatus is pivotally mounted at points a<3> so that if ice forms on the tubes a the weight of the coating moves the element against the action of a spring b and actuates indicating apparatus to show the need of defrosting or automatically sets defrosting means in operation. A finger c on a cooling element snaps over a switch d, putting in circuit an electric heater f and moving a valve i through a solenoid h<2> to shut off the connections a<1>, a<2> and make the coil a a closed circuit. In a modification, the heating means for defrosting comprises a spray of warm liquid controlled by a valve mechanically connected to lever d, the valve i in the cooling medium circuit also being mechanically connected to this lever.
