Abstract
393,170. Variable-speed gearing. COLUCCI, G., 19A, Via Arco Mirelli, Naples, Italy. Oct. 24, 1932, No. 29756. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing, the variation is obtained by changing the ratio of the diameter of planetary rollers 6 to that of a non-rotary track 7 on which they run, the rollers 6 being supported on toggles which carry gear trains passing on the drive to a driven shaft. Toggle arms 2, 4, carried round by a driving-shaft 1 support the spindles 5 on which the rollers 6 are secured. Each spindle is connected by a train 8, 9, 10 to a sun gear 11 fast on the driven shaft 12. In forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the actual speed change is effected by separating pairs of track discs 15, 16 between which conical or rounded rollers 6 are pressed by centrifugal force. In a form shown in Fig. 7, the rollers 6 are rounded cones in pairs centrifugally expanded into contact with a pair of coned tracks 7 which are caused to approach one another to raise the speed of the shaft 12 by turning screws 22 in unison from a control gear 23. On the highest speed, rolling ceases, the rollers 6 being gripped solid between rings 27 loose within the non-rotary tracks 7 and spring-pressed taper sleeves 28 on the driving- shaft 1. As the track cones 7 are separated, the speed of the shaft 12 slows through zero into reverse. Arrangements are described for obtaining increased tractive friction between the elements 6, 7 by a component of the torque and by electromagnetic action respectively.
